Tackling Timely Topics: Speyer's Financial Literacy Curriculum Takes Over the Boulevard

Talk of advertising claims, the impact of geopolitical issues on the economy, and wage estimates floated through the Boulevard as the Middle Schoolers welcomed professionals from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) during the first of their three visits to Speyer, as part of our financial literacy curriculum. This year the instructor teams included Speyer Parents and Staff to assist in the program as the PwC team has not yet returned to full in-person work. Taking a break from their usual morning schedule, each grade explored various financial topics.

Speyer Eighth Graders Bring Home Multiple Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!

The Scholastic Award Winners were announced recently and once again, our Speyer eighth graders brought home awards. This year, we had three Speyer students win multiple awards! Not only are these are wonderful awards, there is something else to consider: our students compete in the 13-18 age group, going up against thousands of high schoolers from around the region. It is extremely impressive that Speyer eighth graders do so well in this esteemed competition!

Middle School Speaker Series Kicks Off with "Broadway on Ninth!"

Speyer Middle Schoolers were treated to their own "backstage chat" as we welcomed a panel of folks with, collectively, decades of experience in multiple roles (pun intended!) in the world of theater. This "Broadway on Ninth!" assembly was the first in a series launched for our Middle School students that will expose them to different fields and perhaps incite hidden passions – or capitalize on current ones.

Speyer Girls "Rocket" to California State University, East Bay for Science Fun!

Spotted off the Boulevard and Zooming into California State University, East Bay: our Speyer girls at their first "Rocket Girls" workshop! Joined by Dr. Danika LeDuc, a chemistry professor specializing in biophysical chemistry and Associate Dean at College of Science at Cal State East Bay, this was the kick-off event for a series of workshops just for our girls launched by the Affinity Group for Parents of Girls!

Speyer Eighth Graders Explore World War I with Research, Remarque, and Poetry

A few days before Winter Break, our eighth graders were joined on Zoom by their parents, teachers, and Speyer administration as they presented the final project for their World War I unit. During this immersion into the study of World War I, they considered how different assignments, all of which tasked them to delve deep into analysis, tells the story of war best and which tells the truth of war best...and what the difference between those two questions truly means.

Spotted on Zoom: That's best-selling author Veera Hiranandani visiting with Speyer fifth graders to talk about the summer book they read: The Night Diary. The Night Diary received many awards including the 2019 Newbery Honor Award, the 2019 Walter Dean Myers Honor Award, and the 2018 Malka Penn Award for Human Rights in Children's Literature.

Speyer Eighth Graders' Pandemic-Twist on "How I Spent My Summer Vacation?"

Over the summer, Speyer students had to contend with a global pandemic, leading to the cancellation of nearly all plans (no camp, limited travel, not able to see relatives). We challenged the oldest students, our eighth graders, to think about how they might respond to this sudden gift of time. Speyer 8th Graders Hold (the First-Ever) Zoom Poetry Recitals During COVID-19 Social Distancing

Words are powerful tools, but right now, they’ve been more difficult to utilize. Sometimes we just don’t have the words to convey what we are feeling, how we are doing, or just the world at this moment. However, something pretty amazing happened (virtually) at Speyer on Friday that gave us a restored hope in finding words to help us cope with what was happening. Speyer’s eighth graders held (perhaps the first-ever) 8th Grade Zoom Poetry Recitals During COVID-19 Social Distancing. They were the culmination of their Distance Learning poetry unit, during which they tackled three key questions: Is it a poem? Why did she write it? and, Is it any good?.

Financial Literacy Fills the Middle School with Topics, Discussion, and More!

Saving and investing, long-term budgeting and financial planning, debt management, environmental stability…all of these topics (and more) were tackled last week when the folks from PricewaterhouseCoopers took over the Boulevard and Middle School classrooms to work with Speyer's students for the second session of this year's Financial Literacy curriculum. Moving beyond the "what" to the "how," each grade explored a different financial concept.
