Speyer Mathletes Dominate in State and National Competitions!

In April, our Middle School Math Team took part in the annual Purple Comet Math Meet, an annual online competition that brings together hundreds of schools from across the world.

Purple Comet is exclusively a team competition: students compete in groups of six or less. Speyer's senior team, Team Bravo, had high expectations for Purple Comet, and came through with a sparkling performance. Team Bravo, competing in the division for Middle Schools with enrollments of 400 or less, finished first in New York State, third in the United States (out of 176 teams), and 11th in the world (out of 503 teams)!

Speyer also fielded three younger teams - Team Delta, Team Foxtrot, and Team Echo -  each of which finished in the top half of the international field!

And we didn’t stop there! Speyer eighth grader Rohan S. was one of four students who represented New York State in early May at the 2021 Raytheon National MATHCOUNTS Competition. (Think of it as the Super Bowl of middle school math contests.) We are thrilled to announce that the New York team had an excellent overall showing, ranking third in the nation.

Rohan personally took the lead in preparing New York’s submission to the cryptography contest, and his effort resulted in a first-place finish! Rohan was also selected to participate in the spectator friendly Countdown Round, making it all the way to the national semifinals. You can watch the Countdown Round on YouTube using this link! It’s a great show! Way to go, Rohan! We are all so proud of you!

Sending a huge standing ovation to all of our Speyer Mathletes and coaches Mr. Jameson and Mr. Chung! GO DRAGONS!!!
