The View...from Speyer's Art Studio!
Henri Matisse said, "Creativity takes courage." If we take this as truth, then our Speyer students are courageous every day, especially when they are exploring Art.
Art is infused into every corner of our Speyer curriculum under the thoughtful and challenging guidance of Mr. Fortunato in Lower School and Mr. Sherry in Middle School. Want a few of our latest Art highlights?
We have the new Speyer Art Gallery that greets all of us as we enter the main academic floor featuring stand-out creations from each grade.
Our fifth graders, as part of their Humanities unit, trekked to the Banksy exhibit here in our city. As they explored how vandalism and graffiti are different (if they are?) and examined our species' need to express ourselves through art, they connected first-hand this influential artist's work to their studies.
We have Kindergarten's watercolor flowers in bloom which they created using the oil-resist technique. Their art was inspired by "The Quilt Story" by Tony Johnston and Tomie de Paola
We had unique character sculptures inhabiting Speyer, the end product of a Middle School project where they had to sketch a character and develop their backstory. They then brought it to life in 3-D, incorporating proportion, scale, and other sculpting techniques.
We have a forest of watercolor trees along one whole wall, painted by our Middle Schoolers who were instructed to "release and reflect" as they observed and painted (no sketching allowed).
We have our INspeyerED Afterschool Digital Art creations exploding off the bulletin boards along with quotes from those student-artists explaining what they love about using digital tools to discover new ways to create!
Yes, Art truly is found everywhere and is part of every day at Speyer. They say a picture is worth a thousand words – take a moment to check out just a few examples of Art at Speyer above! And coming soon: another fabulous community art project! We can't wait to see what Mr. Fortunato and Mr. Sherry challenge us – all of us – to create together next!
