Speyer Chess Wows at the New York City Championships!

We ended January and kicked off February with a winning weekend! Our Speyer Chess Team rocked the New York City Chess Championships and brought home the K-1 Championship! 

Yes, our K-1 team was awarded first place in the city! And we weren’t done there: our K-6 team came in 2nd, our K-9 team was 6th, and our K-3 team came in 8th! Our amazing chess players went head to head against opponents from Hunter, Dalton, Avenues, Lower Lab, Collegiate, and more!

Speyer’s Lev S. went undefeated and tied with two other children for 1st place, while Winter S., Lucas Y., and Raza P., all had 4 of 5, which puts them in a 14-way tie for 2nd place! In the ES Championship (K-6), Speyer's Brewington H. finished in a clear first as he was undefeated, with one draw, for 5.5 points! 

We also had two reserve teams play in the tournament, which brings us to a total of 45 Speyer students participating for the weekend! Our awesome coaches — Fritz Gaspard, John Fedorowicz, and Sean O'Hanlon — supported the entire Speyer Chess team through a Zoom team room on both days of the event, which created a weekend of fun family engagement and oodles of team spirit and camaraderie! We are so proud! High-fives to all of our Speyer Chess players! GO DRAGONS!
