Dragon Debate Kicks Off With A Tournament Win (and More)!
Once again, Dragon Debate kicked off the 2019-2020 season wowing the competition. Last weekend’s event was by far the largest season opening event in the Urban Debate League, with almost 400 students from 36 schools in two states in attendance!
With an undefeated record, Speyer’s team of Zach V., Mikeala G., and Nathan G. won the tournament! This 6th grade team outmaneuvered many teams with older students — including our own 7th and 8th grade teams — to be ranked as champions at the first tournament of the year. What’s more amazing was the fact that it was also this team's first-ever tournament competing in the Open division, after having had a successful run in the Novice division last year. Speyer’s team of 8th graders Alex V, Caitlin M., and Brynn M. also won a team award, and all six of Speyer's Open debaters won a speaker award.
Speyer fielded four new teams in the Novice division, with Speyer’s 7th grade team of Marialba G., Philip M., and Ava P. and our 5th grade team of Navio L., Zadie S., and Jacqueline H. taking home awards at their very first tournament.
Dragon Debaters are busy preparing for their next event — a New York Debate League tournament, hosted here at Speyer!
