How do YOU spend your weekends? Speyer Chess Spends Their Weekends Bringing Home Championships!

What do you do on YOUR weekends? Our Speyer Chess Team tends to spend their “relaxing days” scoring checkmates and championships! Recently, Dragon Chess trekked to the Greater New York City Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament and the United States Amateur Team East Championship, bringing home the City Championship team title for the K-6 division and First Place Middle School Team!

At the highly competitive Greater New York City Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament, 32 Speyer students were among the more than 1,700 students competing for the city championship. After participating across several sections, Speyer Chess once again dominated the competition and clinched the top title as City Championship team in the K-6 division as well as multiple top 10 team awards and individual awards. It was an amazing day for all of our Speyer players with fabulous achievements and a wonderful display of teamwork and sportsmanship!

It was the Speyer team of Brewington, Ryan, Ian, and Johji (aka the Famous Forking Legends) who joined 1,402 chess players at the annual chess extravaganza known as the United States Amateur Team East Championship, which is also called the World Amateur Team. Sponsored and organized by the New Jersey State Chess Federation, 350 teams battled over six rounds to determine the championship, while other teams competed for prizes within their particular skill category. And drum roll… our Speyer Legends won their category and now hold title of First Place Middle School Team! Congrats!

Huge high-fives to Coach John Federowicz, guest coach Fritz Gaspard, and to all of the parents who support our players every weekend! Below are the full results from the Greater New York City Scholastic Chess Championship Tournament!
